Dr. Fernando Ovalle, an esteemed Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, leads the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism with a profound commitment to advancing patient care and research. His extensive clinical practice is complemented by his roles as Director of the Multidisciplinary Comprehensive Diabetes Clinic and Diabetes and Glycemic Control Programs at UAB Hospital.

With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Ovalle’s research delves into diabetes management, energy metabolism, and innovative therapies for type 1 diabetes. His expertise extends to the epidemiology and pathophysiology of lesser-known diabetes subtypes, including Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of the Adult and Monogenic Diabetes.
